Sonoma County Democrats Urge No on 98, Yes on 99 to Address Competing ‘Eminent Domain’ Propositions

The Sonoma County Democratic Party is urging voters to vote "No’ on Proposition 98 and ‘Yes” on Proposition 99, the eminent domain propositions that are on the upcoming June 3 ballot.

Members of the Sonoma County Democratic Central Committee voted overwhelming to endorse Proposition 99 and to reject Proposition 98. Local Democratic Party leaders are educating the voters to prevent potential confusion that could arise regarding these competing initiatives before voters take to the polls June 3

“We firmly believe that Proposition 98 has a hidden agenda under the guise of eminent domain,” said Maria Peluso, chairperson of the Democratic Central Committee, “and that many provisions embedded in it will do more harm than good as far as the public is concerned. For example, Proposition 98 threatens California’s future public water endeavors, such as needed groundwater and surface water storage projects.”

“The public would be subjected to predictable and protracted litigation by those opposed to new housing and business development for generations to come. In addition, Proposition 98 hurts renters by eliminating renter protections and rent control, which also have nothing to do with eminent domain,” Peluso added.

Members of the committee examined Proposition 99 as well and believe it serves to fight eminent domain abuse, while strengthening the rights of homeowners against private developers who want to take advantage of existing law.

California’s Secretary of State’s website declares that Proposition 99, “Bars state and local governments from using eminent domain to acquire an owner-occupied residence, as defined, for conveyance to a private person or business entity.”

Peluso said, “We call on all Sonoma County voters to oppose Proposition 98 by voting no, and support Proposition 99 by voting yes on June 3."
