John Laird to Deliver Keynote Address at SCDP Crab Feed - February 25

John Laird, California's new Secretary for Natural Resources under Governor Jerry Brown, will deliver the keynote address at his year's Crab Feed. Laird, a former California Assembly member and longtime environmental advocate, co-authored AB-32 -- California's watershed climate bill that was signed into law in 2006 and mandates the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Laird received a score of 100% from both the Sierra Club and the California League of Conservation Voters for his Assembly voting record on environmental issues. Nominations Sought for Annual Democratic Party Awards

The SCDP Fundraising Committee is seeking nominations from the Democratic community for annual awards to local Democrats to be presented at the Crab Feed. The SCDP Fundraising Committee will screen all nominations and recommend candidates for each award category to the Sonoma County Democratic Party Central Committee and will provide a list of all those nominated.

At the regularly scheduled January SCDP meeting, members will discuss the merits of each candidate, culminating in a vote by secret ballot for one person for each award category. The identity of the winner will remain secret and awards will be presented at the Crab Feed.

Please review the award categories and the requirements for each. Write a brief statement giving the qualifications of your nominee and your reasons for nominating. Nominations must be received by December 31, 2010 for consideration.

Return nominations to the SCDP electronically at info@sonomademocrats.org or by US mail to Sonoma County Democratic Party, P.O.Box 3727, Santa Rosa, CA 95401

*NOTES As an activist, Roberta was a leader and member in many organizations, and as a retired teacher, education was one of her passions. She was active in the California Teachers Association, National Education Association, the Sonoma County Educators Council, and the Healdsburg Area Teachers Association. Other affiliations included National Organization for Women, Sierra Club, NAACP, National Women’s Political Caucus and California State Democratic Central Committee. Her union work and liberal politics probably started as a family trait, but Roberta blazed her own path and was a mainstay of the Sonoma County Democratic Party. Throughout her life she was active in a host of issues that benefited from her skills and contacts.
